Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about Bobbin Works Longarm Quilting in Bixby, OK—from turnaround time and design choices to thread and backing tips. Learn what to expect before sending in your quilt.

How does this process work?
Step 1: Finish your quilt top and book your quilting service with Bobbin Works.
Step 2: Send your quilt top (and possibly backing) by mail or drop it off in Bixby, OK.
Step 3: We’ll bring your vision to life—layering your quilt top, batting, and backing.
Step 4: Pick up your quilted masterpiece or have it shipped straight to your door.

What is edge-to-edge quilting?
Edge-to-edge quilting is a continuous stitching design that covers the entire quilt top from one edge to the other. These repeated patterns are a beautiful way to add texture and interest to your quilt, while also securing all three layers of your quilt together (top, batting, and backing). Book your quilt today! After you pay, follow the instructions to ship your top or schedule an in-person drop-off time.

How long will it take to receive my finished quilt?
Quilts enter the queue when they arrive at Bobbin Works.
Scenario: If the estimate on our website says "3 weeks" and we receive your quilt on January 1st, you can expect to pick it up on or before January 21st, unless you choose shipping in which case you will likely receive your finished quilt by January 28th.

How do I prepare my quilt to be quilted?
Trim any loose threads from both the front and back of your quilt—especially dark ones that might show through lighter fabrics. Press all seams flat, even if you’re shipping the top. Finally, pin a note to clearly mark the top of your quilt top. These steps make a big difference in the final result!

What backing options does Bobbin Works offer?
We offer select colors of ultrasoft minky from Shannon Fabrics—a top-quality brand known for its exceptional feel and durability. Minky makes quilts incredibly cozy thanks to its luxurious softness, plush texture, and warm feel. It's a popular choice for snuggly finishes and long-lasting comfort. See color options in the "Book Your Quilt" form.

Can I provide my own backing?
Absolutely! Make sure your backing is at least 8 inches longer and 8 inches wider than your quilt top measurements. You might be able to purchase cotton or flannel fabrics in "extra-wide" increments, making it easier to piece together before sending to Bobbin Works. If using a sheet, ensure that it has a thread count of 250 or less to avoid stitching issues. The highest-quality sheets are too dense to quilt a consistent design.

What type of thread and batting do you use?
We select neutral colors of Glide quilting thread that blend with the lightest shades on your quilt top. For batting, we use Quilter’s Dream 80/20—a high-quality blend of 80% cotton and 20% polyester that offers beautiful drape, durability, and softness.

How much does it cost?
At Bobbin Works, we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality quilting services with transparent pricing. Our inclusive cost covers premium batting, top-quality needles, thread, and stitching patterns. Experience the difference with Bobbin Works, where you know what to expect from the start. What happens when you stitch a top to a pieced quilt back?
A detailed pieced quilt back looks the same as a quilt top. It includes many tiny pieces and seams. Quilting a pieced back to a pieced top doesn’t produce ideal results. Backs shift and shrink slightly during the quilting process. This leads to misaligned borders and uneven results. Additionally, excess seams on the back can disrupt the smooth flow of the quilting pattern. For the best finish, we recommend using a solid or minimally pieced backing whenever possible.

What should I do about hard items on my quilt such as zippers, buttons, and snaps?
Please remove all hard items—like zippers, buttons, snaps, and any embellishments—before sending your quilt to Bobbin Works. These items can damage the quilting machine and interfere with the stitching process. Make sure the quilt top is free of anything that isn’t soft and stitchable.

Can I submit a stitching design request?
Yes! Please share your favorite designs with us. We’ll review your request and let you know if it can be added to our collection. At Bobbin Works, we believe every quilt has a story, and we’re here to help yours shine through every stitch.
